A corrugated box is a type of packaging made from corrugated fiberboard, which consists of three main layers:
- Outer Liner: The smooth outer layer, providing a printable surface for branding or labels.
- Inner Liner: The smooth layer inside the box, which protects the contents.
- Corrugated Medium (Flutes): The wavy or zigzag layer between the outer and inner liners, giving the box its strength and cushioning properties.
The Basics of Corrugated
Now that you know the differences between corrugated and cardboard, we can take a deeper dive into the basics of corrugated. There are a number of factors that come into play when making a corrugated box. This is also why they’re so customizable.
1.Flute Profiles:the basic of the corrugated, which decide the material thickness,as below pics:

The most common flutes used today are A, B, C, E, and F, with A being the largest flute size. Flute size determines the thickness of the walls as well as the stacking strength of your corrugated box. An “E” flute is approximately 2 mm thick and is an ideal option for shipping boxes such as mailer corrugated boxes. As you go through F flutes, the thickness is smaller than E flute which mostly used in inlay material.
2.Type of corrugated board
Double-wall is when two sheets of corrugated medium are glued between three sheets of liner. This board is commonly used for heavier products or products that require a stronger box for shipping.

And lastly, triple-wall is when three sheets of corrugated medium are glued between four sheets of liner. This board is the strongest out of all the board styles and is often used for industrial parts or produce bins.
3.Face Paper Type:widely used on surface of the corrugated paper boxes, has different material could choose, convenient for printing.
There are 3 types of Face Paper that can be used for corrugated boxes which making printing better to replace liner papers, such as brown kraft paper, card paper or art texture paper.Normally art texture paper mounting with corrugated flute E higher costs than other paper.Certainly double sides of boxes printing colors costs more than only one side printing.
Characteristics of Corrugated Boxes
- Strong and Durable: The fluted structure absorbs shocks and resists compression.
- Lightweight: Easy to handle and transport, while reducing shipping costs.
- Customizable: Available in various sizes, thicknesses, and shapes to suit specific needs.
- Eco-Friendly: Made from recyclable and renewable materials
Advantages
- Cost-Effective: Economical to produce and transport.
- Protective: Provides cushioning against impacts and vibrations.
- Recyclable: Environmentally friendly, often made from recycled paper.
Common Uses
- Shipping and Logistics: Protects products during transportation.
- Retail Packaging: Often used for displaying and delivering goods in stores.
- Storage: Stores items safely in warehouses or homes.
- E-commerce: Ideal for delivering online orders due to its protective qualities
Corrugated boxes are indispensable in industries like shipping, retail, food packaging, and e-commerce, offering a practical solution for safe and efficient packaging.
